Scarborough Town Centre, Toronto.
We were asked to participate in a small design competition for the Market Court to add some interest and furnishings. I believe there were three design firms involvrd and we had three days to come up with a proposal. All three firms were paid to make a proposal and the winner also got the commission.
We selected a standard, steel space frame from which colourful Marimekko banners were hung. Coloured acrylic panels with various cut out patterns were placed in the space frame, which cast playful shapes on the floor and people. Additional lighting was also incorporated in the space frame. Trees and planting were introduced in planters of various sizes. The planters also supported shelves, which acted as table surfaces to place take-out food on. Planters, tables and stools were made of fiberglass according to our design and specifications. The stool were filled with sand to stop them from tipping.
