Four Seasons Hotel, Belleville. 1970.
Issy Sharp made a deal with Bell Canada to build hotel in Bellville that Four Seasons Hotels would manage and and operate as a hotel during the summertime and bell would use it as a training centre during winter. Issy asked me to do the interior design. Raymond Moriyama was the architect.
Each bedroom had a bed, night table, desk and luggage rack, drawers and a desk and lounge chair, a mirror, bookshelves, a tackboard covered with bright Marimekko fabric, a headboard with night tables, a light valance, a waste basket and a desk lamp. It was an opportunity to design most of the items. From a cleaning point of view, it is desirable to have as many items as possible off the floor. We decided to hang the desk, drawers, shelving and luggage rack from the wall. In order to counteract the load from one side of the wall, we placed these items back to back to balance the load. The partitions between the rooms were made with metal studs which could not support the loads, so we inserted wood two by fours inside the metal studs which were to receive the bolts, which went from one room to the other. This made for a very strong wall and you could actually stand on the furniture.
