Jēkabs Zvilna was a classmate of my father when they studied architecture in the thirties at the University of Riga in Latvia.

I have been learning about Zvilna's explorations and processes and he has written five articles for the vintage "karelia news". I have been fascinated and inspired by his images. There is something magical about them, providing an opportunity to participate in the creative and formative processes of nature.

In one of my interior architectural projects, a hotel, I was able to use one of his images to create a printed, cotton textile that was used for curtains and bedspreads. I selected the colour range and determined the scale. The fabric was printed in Montreal for Tamarack Textiles, which was one of my creations. Unfortunately the textile printing company went out of business many years ago. If I could find a realistic printing situation, I would love to bring out a collection of textiles based on Zvilna's images. Jēkabs and I talked about this many times and he has authorized me to use his images for commercial applications.
